The mornings are dark and quiet. We sit in the kitchen sipping coffee and chatting while we wait for the first light so we can head out to the fields on harvest days. Unlike the heat of the summer, these recent mornings require lot’s of layers and a couple of breaks to head into the house to warm our hands under warm water. We’ve already had a frost which arrived on the first official day of Fall. Go figure! It’s really amazing how quickly the weather, daylight hours, and overall energy around the farm has shifted.
The harvest list is changing by the week and we’re holding on to the remainder of our summer crops with a tight grip. Since the summer production of hot weather produce has slowed down to almost a halt we are reserving the remainder for ourselves since we no longer have enough to fill all of our CSA boxes. The CSA share has shifted to full blown fall produce and their boxes are epic these days! However, that means for us that every cherry tomato will get consumed-even if I have to sun dry them all. Eggplants and zucchini will all get blanched and packed into freezer bags for hearty soups this winter. And if I’m on top of it, I will continue to make more basil pesto to stash away for a snowy day when we’re craving the bright flavors of the summer season. At the rate I’m going we may have to purchase yet another chest freezer!
This coming weekend we will continue to till more areas of the farm and sow winter cover crops. I’m also planning on a big dinner with some good friends that we haven’t seen in months (even though they live 3 miles away!) because we finally have more time to relax and catch up with our peeps. I have a feeling It’s going to be a glorious Fall around here filled with great food, friends that we have missed all summer, and plenty of tasty beer. Happy Friday from Tumbleweed!
