Dishing Up the Dirt

national pig day

March 2, 2011

In case you missed it, yesterday was a national holiday.

Thats right, it was national pig day.  And I almost let it slip by unnoticed.   Which is pretty unbelievable since I love pigs and I love holidays.   Any chance to celebrate with food is my idea of a good time.  Especially if the food group is pork.

Anyway, I was still feeling a little under the weather and wasn’t sure if I wanted to go out to dinner last night.  (Still was unaware of the holiday)  But at the last-minute my sister and I decided to have a date and go out to eat. Olympic Provisions is a lovely little restaurant in Portland and I was excited to check it out.  American charcuterie, what more could I ask for? And like magic, one glance at the menu and I was feeling better already.  Almost 100 percent, and then the waiter came by to announce the national holiday to us and I about sprung out of my seat.  National pig day?  How have I never known about this holiday? Yes, I was feeling like a million bucks, especially since everything was discounted in honor of the holiday.  We didn’t even order off the menu, we had the waiter choose everything for us.  Which was the best way to go about it in my opinion.

First up, a whiskey and ginger ale.  Extremely delicious, and made my throat feel better in about two seconds.  Next up, some bread and olive oil.

And then the big guns.  The meat plate was awesome.  I don’t even know all the different pate`s but they were all amazing.  Along with some lovely salami, pickled cauliflower, and pickled onions. To die for.  With some extremely creamy blue cheese with apricot preserves.  The best!

My new favorite holiday.  Did anyone else celebrate?

This might be my new favorite holiday! Great evening. I love going out-and going out with you is especially fun! Maybe we need to start the wine/cheese/meat tour around Portland.
