Dishing Up the Dirt

chocolate almond butter smoothie

I just found my drug of choice.

I can’t fully explain the amount of energy (and natural high) I had after consuming this breakfast smoothie. But to give you an idea I got more accomplished in the 5 hours between consuming this smoothie and a lunch break. I’m already dreaming about making this exact smoothie again tomorrow. Taylor is on board too. He was running around getting things done left and right after slurping his down. You may notice I am still “eating” my smoothies while Taylor still enjoys drinking his with a straw. To each their own I guess.

I apologize in advance because I went a little wild with the ingredients (a recent trip to the natural food store is to blame!) I am in love with the owners of our neighborhood health food store Mothers and after chatting about smoothies with them I ended up with a basket full of superfood add ins!  Feel free to leave out anything you don’t have.  Honestly, this smoothie would taste great if it only had banana, spinach, cocoa, almond butter and milk of choice.  However, now that we have a pantry stocked full of “superfoods” I felt the need to go crazy. Feel free to go wild or keep it simple.

If you have a favorite go-to morning smoothie leave your recipe in the comments. Or tell us your favorite “secret” ingredient in your morning shakes. I am trying to convince my dad to drink more smoothies and need as much help as I can get!!!

Anyhow, we have a hot date with a bunch of chicken farmers tonight and I’m thinking we may need to whip up another smoothie to give us the energy we need to get through the evening. Wish us luck. I think we will be out past our bedtime. Yikes!

Wow! Full of superfoods! I can understand why you were so full of energy. This will be the perfect breakfast to follow a long run before a long day at work. Good luck with the chicken farmers!

  2. I need these power foods in the morning to pick me up out of my sluggish winter rut. Looks delicious and I love that you are eating it with a spoon! Yum!

  3. Love!! If I’m going to eat chocolate it is often in the morning because it is such a strong stimulant/energizer for me, especially coupled with maca. So I love chocolate breakfast smoothies with many of the similar superfoods, and have posted a few. They’re not all that different from yours though, sorry! We’re thinking along the same lines. 😉 Cherry-Choco Antioxidant http://wholenourishment.blogspot.ch/2013/08/cherry-choco-antioxidant-smoothie.html + Mexican Chocolate and Date Smoothie http://wholenourishment.blogspot.ch/2013/03/mexican-chocolate-and-date-breakfast.html

Katie, yum! Those smoothies sound fantastic!

  4. I can imagine you two were feeling like champs all day after this bad boy! It’s full of super powers. I love adding dates to smoothies too, so tasty.

I hope your date with the chicken farmers went well and you come home with a few chickens soon. Henry could use a few new friends. 😉

  5. I’m officially on the hunt for maca powder now! 🙂

      It’s the best!!!

  6. Gail says:

Yippee, I have everything but spinach and gogi berries. Could use some extra energy, and it sounds delicious, of course.

Holy jam packed with awesomeness!!!!! I love every single thing you put in these smoothies. I’ve been adding maca powder to my smoothies too – did you know it’s an aphrodisiac? Caaaaahraaaazy! Those mayans really know their stuff! 🙂 I’d love to sit next to you and savor mine with a spoon while watching Taylor run around slurping his 🙂

This sounds delicious and will most likely be my lunch. I like to add a bit of Spirulina to my smoothies. I temper the amount depending on what kind of smoothie because it is such a strong taste.

Sounds good! personally i do not overload my smoothies with superfoods, although i put maca nad hemp protien in my partner’s, ha, ha, just for the strength! however, try my all time favourite smoothie: 2 bananas, 2 oranges, peeled, juice of half a lemon, grated nutmeg, 2-3 handfuls of spinach- I put even more, but that’s me, 4 nice plump dates and 400 ml water. Whiz in your blender and enjoy. I looooove it, hope you will too!

    1. Andrea says:

Alex your smoothie sounds absolutely perfect!!! We will definitely give it a whirl. Thanks for sharing. My dad loves oranges so I think this could be a good start for him 🙂

  10. “Hot date with a bunch of chicken farmers” – HAH that made me laugh out loud. I hope it’s much… less smelly than it sounds. Love this smoothie and all your superfood add-ins. I’ve been meaning to try maca powder, but I know I’ll have a similar experience if I visit a health food store here, so I’ve stayed away 🙂 I do, however, have some cacao nibs, and this looks like the perfect excuse to finish them off!

I had a very similar creation this morning and I loved it!
    1 1/2 frozen banana
1 heaping tbsp of raw cacao powder
    1/2 cup of blueberries
    Dash of cinnamon
    1/4 cup of raw hemp
    1 tbsp of chia seeds
    1/2 cup of coconut water
    1/2 cup of cashew milk
It was the best blend I have had yet! So delicious. I wish I could do the Maca thing but I may be one of the few that gets really bad anxiety from it 🙁 Could be that I’m a fire sign. Who knows!
Thank you for all your amazing recipes!

Yum!!! Thanks for sharing. Love the sound of this one 🙂

  12. Chocolate and superfoods for breakfast? SIGN. ME. UP.

  13. Rachel says:

Andrea, do you love your blender? I have one that us not superpowered, and have been able to get away with it so far, but it’s not able to handle/mix cacao very well. I don’t want to give up my glass one for one that is plastic, but it’s becoming more tempting!

    1. Andrea says:

      Rachel,
I am not huge fan of plastic, however, I absolutely love my Vitamix. I got it for my 30th birthday and have used it everyday since. I know they are really expensive but I honestly would give up the roof over my head for it!!! I didn’t know how smooth a smoothy could be! I am not a huge fan of expensive kitchen gadgets but a Vitamix is worth it! Let me know what you end up doing!!!

New to your blog and loving it. I have made your chocolate-almond oatmeal smoothie for breakfast and the beet tzatziki twice. I will have to give this one a try soon. Here is a smoothie I have been enjoying lately.

    1 frozen orange
    1 cup almond milk
    1 banana (fresh or frozen)
1/2 tsp maple or agave syrup
    1 tsp turmeric powder
    few pinches of cinnamon
    a pinch cayenne

    Serves one. Enjoy!

  15. This sounds like my perfect breakfast meal 🙂

I made this for breakfast this morning. It was really good. Did have to omit some things, but that was OK. I drank it at 5:00am and it is now 8:30 and I am still really full! That is good!

  17. Denise says:

Great smoothie! I love the bowls in the photo, where do you get them?
