Dishing Up the Dirt

Spicy Roasted Chickpeas

barre3chickpeas

My love affair with chickpeas is going pretty strong. If you’ve been reading this blog for a while you will likely notice I cook with chickpeas/garbanzo beans a lot. I love how versatile they are. Hummus? Yes please. In soups? Why not? Roasted with simple spices until they are perfectly crunchy? Seriously addicting!

It is still incredibly cold here. Our washer and dryer are completely frozen and we cannot clean our clothes. Taylor tried to cheer me up by saying “babe, this is country living at its finest. We can hand wash everything and it will be fun!” I immediately poured myself a glass of wine after processing what the next few months are going to look like.

On a lighter note, these roasted chickpeas have climbed the ladder and are my new favorite afternoon snack.  I cannot wait until farm season picks back up and we can make bigger batches of these to have on hand out in the fields. Until then, I will eat this lovely snack straight out of my new favorite heart bowl! Isn’t it darling?

Spicy Roasted Chickpeas

Prep Time: 5 mins.    Cook Time: 35-45 mins.    Serves: 4-6

  • 4 cups cooked chickpeas OR 2 (15 oz) cans chickpeas. Drained, rinsed and completely patted dry. (Don't skimp on patting them dry otherwise they won't get very crispy!)
  • 1 TBS grapeseed oil (or oil of choice)
  • 2 tsp chili powder
  • 1/4 tsp ground cumin
  • pinch of cayenne pepper
  • 1/2 tsp fine sea salt

Preparation

  1. Preheat oven to 400 degrees.
  2. In a large bowl combine the chickpeas, oil, spices and salt. Mix well.
  3. Place chickpeas in a single layer on a prepared baking sheet.
  4. Bake in the oven for about 35-40 minutes (timing depends on your specific oven. These could be done in as little as 20 minutes.) Toss chickpeas every 10 minutes or so.
  5. Serve warm or at room temperature.

I love chickpeas too! So much so that I have several friends who have given me the nickname Chickpea 🙂 Being called after one of my favourite foodstuffs? I don’t mind, especially when it calls to mind delicious recipes like this one. Going on my Christmas nibbles list. And I love the bowl – so sweet 🙂

  2. Roasted chickpeas are seriously amazing! I make something similar to this and use them for vegan tacos. They are SO good!

Wow, and I thought it was cold here! That’s one thing about the weather here in the Sierras – it doesn’t get all that cold, so frozen pipes/washers are less commonplace than they are up north. I tell you, lady, you’re one strong woman and you’re totally my role model! These roasted chickpeas look amaaaaaaaazing! Do you take mail orders? 😉

Can you overnight me one of you delicious cocktails please?

  5. I can’t believe your washer and dryer are frozen! 🙁
Just look at it like this- if some crazy natural disaster took place, you would be the most likely to survive. The rest of us spoiled brats wouldn’t know what to do with ourselves.

I could survive on roasted chickpeas though. I love them! The spice blend you used sounds delicious!

This looks so good, Andrea! Have you tried roasting them with cinnamon and honey for a sweeter snack? I bet you could do a holiday spice mix, mix in some nuts, and end up with a really cute stocking stuffer!

    1. Andrea says:

I love the sound of a sweet version of these! Thanks for the idea Emilie!

  7. My mums Italian family used to make roasted chickpeas as a snack, but without cooking the chickpeas first. They loved them, but I used to call them “little rocks”! These ones sound much better 🙂

  8. I couldn’t get the crunchiness right with roasted chickpeas the last time I tried them but I should definitely give them another try with this recipe! Hope things warm up a little for you!

We are finally warming up after a week of temperatures in the single digits. I hope warm weather is headed your way! These chickpeas look so good! What a perfect snack on a winter day.

Hope you can at least have hot showers….even if the washer doesn’t work..

Heat tapes should keep that washer running. Here’s what you’ll be looking for and your local hardware store should have something similar. We go to Farm & Fleet here in Wisconsin. http://www.lowes.com/pd_24436-72436-AHB-016_0__?productId=1069433&Ntt=heat+tape&pl=1&currentURL=%3FNtt%3Dheat%2Btape&facetInfo=#BVRRWidgetID .
    Good luck.

Perfect time of year to crank up the oven and make these. Can’t believe your laundry situation 🙁 Forget country living, I would be headed straight to a laundromat!
