Dishing Up the Dirt

Hippie Chocolate Bourbon Balls

If there is one thing I love around the holidays it’s a chocolate bourbon truffle. There is something so decadent and comforting about this rich treat. However, since we are still out of a “real” working kitchen I didn’t want to make anything too complicated so I decided to turn to my favorite method of making treats which involves only one piece of equipment and minimal dishes. Thank god for my trusty food processor!

I marched out to the barn (my temporary kitchen) armed with all of my ingredients, food processor and plenty of bourbon (it’s cold out in the barn so thankfully a few sips of bourbon warmed me right up!) These truffles are so stinking easy to make and they taste just as rich and satisfying as the real deal (in my opinion!) Taylor will often get sick of my “hippie” energy bites when he’s craving a rich treat but he actually really enjoyed these guys. I think the bourbon helped.

The only downside I had making these was doing the dishes outside with the garden hose again. Fingers crossed there will only be a few more weeks of this. Thankfully, these puppies were totally worth it and I can’t wait to share them with my family on Christmas afternoon.

I had fun rolling these truffles into different toppings like cacao, hemp seeds, and shredded coconut. They all compliment the rich chocolate/date center and add a nice touch.

There are still a few more days left to blast Christmas music and play around with cookies in your kitchen. I hope you all enjoy these truffles as much as we do. Enjoy!

Hippie Chocolate Bourbon Balls

Prep Time: 15 minutes    Cook Time: 0 minutes    Serves: 15-18 balls

  • 1 cup pitted Medjool dates (about 10-12 dates)
  • 1 1/2 cups raw cashews
  • 1/2 teaspoon fine salt
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 2 Tablespoons coconut oil
  • 3-4 Tablespoons bourbon
  • 1/4 cup raw cacao powder + additional for rolling
Toppings:
  • Raw shredded coconut
  • Hemp seeds
  • Cacao powder

Preparation

  1. Soak the dates in a bowl of warm water until they soften up a bit (about 10 minutes). Drain the dates and place them in a food processor with cashews, salt, cinnamon, coconut oil, bourbon and cacao powder. Process for 1-2 minutes or until the mixture forms a sticky ball. Taste test and adjust seasonings if need be. If the dough is too wet add a little more cocoa powder (or almond flour if you have some) If the dough is too dry add a little more bourbon or a splash of water.
  2. Remove the "dough" from the food processor and place into a bowl and chill in the fridge for 15 minutes to set.
  3. Form 15-18 balls with your hands and roll into desired toppings. Store in the fridge or freezer in an airtight container.

I made these for a potluck this week and they were gone in a flash! Good thing I held some back that wouldn’t fit in the tupperware or I wouldn’t have gotten one for myself. Delicious! I bet rum or some strongly flavored liqueurs would be nice as well.

I made these to share with my husband on our upcoming anniversary and they turned out just perfect! I make date bars for my kids frequently, so I was familiar with concept, but wasn’t sure about how they would taste with the burbon. They are delicious! My husband will love them! Thank you for sharing!
