Dishing Up the Dirt

cinnamon and date smoothie

November 15, 2012

I can’t even believe it….The sun came our for us at Tumbleweed yesterday!

Still loving that view!

Not only did the sun come out, but our good friend Trevor drove all the way from Portland to help us seed the last section of our field with a winter cover crop. What a guy!

While Trevor worked hard we took the opportunity to be lazy.

Things really are winding down at the farm.  There isn’t much that needs to get done until we start ordering our seeds and get to work in the greenhouse.  That won’t happen until February though.  The panic and anxious feeling in my chest is almost overwhelming. I am not much of a winter person and when I am not digging around in the dirt I feel like I lose my sense of purpose a bit.  Fortunately, I got a job as a hostess at a nice restaurant in town. The downside, I have to dress up (which required an emergency trip to the mall) and work doesn’t start until the evening.  I am a get up and go kind of girl, so the fact that I have to wait until 5 pm to go to work is kind of crazy for me.  That is usually the time I start cooking dinner. Yikes!

Enough complaining though. I am fortunate to have a job and once springtime comes rolling around I will get my farming on.  I just need to live in the present.  Something I have had a hard time doing lately.

Let’s change the subject and talk about this smoothie!

I am just going to go ahead and say it. It’s the best DAMN smoothie ever! I know I say those words all the time on this blog (I swear I always mean it). But you guys, this smoothie is so creamy and delicious I had to stop myself from making a second one.

Dates, banana, almond milk, and cinnamon make up this tasty little number.  You could even put a little vodka in this puppy and you have yourself a holiday cocktail! But for now, lets stick with the breakfast smoothie recipe.

1 banana

4 large dates, pitted and chopped

1 cup almond milk

1 tbs pure maple syrup

1 tsp cinnamon

a light sprinkle of sea salt

a few ice cubes.

Place all ingredients into a blender and blend until smooth.  About 1 minute.

Enjoy!
