Dishing Up the Dirt

The Farm Diaries + A Book Giveaway!

May 12, 2017

This post is a long one folks so I hope your coffee mug is full or that you’ve got a nice glass of wine you can sip while you read. It’s been a complete whirlwind of a month that has included a lot of travel for the DUTD book tour and I must say, damn it feels good to be back at the farm! I’m so thrilled with the opportunities that the book has brought about and I can’t wait to share some fun things that are on the horizon but for now, my heart is in Parkdale and it feels great to be dirty again. Taylor and Henry have kept things afloat while I’ve been away and as you can see from the photos above our farm family is growing. Three little pigs have joined us here at the farm and we’re happy to have them in the rotation. I’ll chat more about them below but I first want to share details from my amazing book tour and all of the badass folks I’ve met along the way. I apologize in advance for all the links that follow but I am seriously so grateful to all of the wonderful people who helped make my tour possible. It takes a village to make a farm girl’s dreams come true and I am over the moon stoked to be in such good hands. So thank you for reading along and supporting all of the folks who support Dishing up the Dirt. First stop, New York City baby!

One of the most challenging things about having my cookbook released in the early spring is that Taylor and I can’t really leave the farm together. I knew this was going to be an issue a year before my book came out when my publisher said “your book will be released in early March.” I thought, shit, I can’t leave the farm in March, or really anytime in the spring. Can’t my book get released in the late fall? Turns out Spring is the perfect time for a farm to table cookbook to launch. It’s just tricky figuring out the logistics of leaving the farm to go promote the book! In fact, Taylor and I have never been away from the farm at the same time during the season. The truth is, the farm can’t be left unattended for more than a few hours so I knew traveling across the country with my man wouldn’t be an option.  Thankfully, my amazing father-in-law (who is a seasoned farmer) offered to fly out to Tumbleweed Farm so that Taylor could come with me to NYC for my book signing and most important, to meet the team who made this all come together. Our first stop in NYC was to the HarperCollins offices. I cannot tell you how surreal it was to be in that building and see all of the floor to ceiling books that occupy every square inch of that space. The Dishing up the Dirt cookbook is in really good company and I had to wipe tears from my eyes when we first walked in. It was overwhelming in the best way possible! I was really excited to meet my book team because for the past year and half we’ve only communicated via email (and phone) and it was awesome to put faces behind everyone! After meeting the team we headed to my book signing in the West Village. Thank you barre3 for hosting the event and to Ancolie  for whipping up food from the DUTD book for the occasion. I had to bring a little taste of Oregon with me too so the always amazing Union Wine Co. sponsored my book tour by supplying wine for all of my events. They are amazing and trust me, rosé out of a can is one of the best treats a farmer could ask for! If you haven’t tried any of their wine please click on the link above and find out where you can purchase it. The company is amazing and I’m honored that they were a part of my tour. My book signing at barre3 was a total blast. Thank you to everyone who came out to the event. It was so awesome meeting all of my NYC readers and getting to clink glasses (or cans!) and chat about food, farming and pretty much everything in between. I loved every minute of that event and I must say, New York, you did not disappoint! My next event was at Sweet Green in the Meatpacking District and it was fun to create 3 different grain bowls for the occasion. Thank you everyone who supported that event as well!

After NYC I dropped Taylor off at the farm and headed out to Missoula, Montana with my dad. We road tripped from Parkdale and it was awesome! My dad and I haven’t had this much quality time in years and the trip was really special.  My brother and sister-in-law live in Missoula and it was a great opportunity for us to all get together. The event was held at Fact and Fiction bookstore and I loved the vibe of the Missoula crowd. I was able to wear jeans and a flannel which made me feel right at home! Thanks again to Union Wine Co. for supporting this great event. Missoula I love you! And if you visit Missoula in the near future please check out Bernice’s Bakery for all of your coffee and pastry needs. This place is magical!

Finally, it was my Mom’s turn to take a road trip with me up to Seattle. We were lucky enough to have Hotel Andrä sponsor our stay. If you are a foodie and visiting Seattle this is the hotel for you! I mean, there is literally a cooking school right in the hotel. The Hot Stove Society is the bomb! They offer year-round cooking classes operated by the amazingly talented Tom Douglas. The restaurant in the hotel (Lola)  was absolutely wonderful. Even if you aren’t staying at the hotel please check out the restaurant.  The menu is fantastic.

My first night in Seattle I was honored to prepare a 6 course meal from the DUTD book with the seriously badass Jim Henkens of Marine Area 7 It was a private dinner for 25 folks and it was one of the highlights of my life. Seriously amazing! Being in the kitchen with Jim was not only fun but it was super special to see my food come to life in a setting like this. Thank you to all of the amazing folks who purchased tickets and got their books signed. The evening was magical and all night long I had to keep pinching myself that I was not dreaming. Jim you are one special human being. Thank you for the opportunity to cook in your kitchen with you!

Last and certainly not least, I gave an author talk at my new favorite bookstore Book Larder. Book Larder is a special place because it’s strictly a cookbook bookstore. They even have a full functioning open kitchen front and center! I prepared my beet butter from the book to a full house (again…pinch me!!!).  If I’m being honest this event was the one I was most nervous about. I’m not very comfortable public speaking however, once I got going (and got to look at my mom in the crowd for comfort!) I ended up really loving it. The folks who came out were all really lovely and the staff at Book Larder is top notch. Seriously, I love this bookstore and if you find yourself in the Seattle area go check it out. You’ll be in cookbook heaven!

Phew….Did I lose some of you back there? I hope not. I know this post is a lot but I’m still so damn proud of this book and I can’t say thank you enough to everyone who has purchased a copy, left a review on amazon, or sponsored my events. I am indebted to so many folks that the only way I’m going to pay everyone back is to just pay it forward. And if you all want to join me in paying it forward here is my plan. I’m going to do something spontaneously kind every single day for the next month. Whether it’s donating a book, produce, baking cookies for my mailman, gifting a neighbor with a 6 pack of beer, or simply letting someone cut in line at the grocery store I’m committed to spreading kindness around. It took a lot of kind people to make my dreams come true and I owe the universe so much love and gratitude! I’m going to donate a book to one lucky reader too. I know many of you already own the book but I think they make great gifts too. So if you leave a comment below with ideas of how you’ll pay it forward I’ll choose a winner randomly by May, 17th.

Now that I’m back at the farm for the time being (I’ll keep you all posted on events that come up later this summer/fall) I feel like I’m getting into a good groove with Taylor, Henry, the plants and animals. As much as it’s been amazing to travel around I really do love being home. The work load is overwhelming crazy right now but this truly is where I find my peace.

This season we are expanding our operation a bit with the addition of a new hoop house, new tractor implements and a rotation of animals which feels pretty good. Our motto this year is “work smarter not harder.” So far it’s been working! And speaking of animals, the pigs are a total blessing. Not only are the pigs the best compost eaters in the world but they are great for our soil and will be great for our bodies.  We are raising them for meat and I know some folks will be sad to know that but I am committing myself to keeping our food as local as possible this year. We love our pigs and they will be treated with kindness and love until the end. If farming has taught me anything it’s the importance of the full circle of life.  The less we rely on outsourcing the better for us, our community and the planet as a whole.  Cheers to local food first!

Alright, I know your eyes are probably glazed over right now but thanks for reading along! Don’t forget to leave a comment below for a chance to win a copy of Dishing up the Dirt.

One more thing…..if you all could send some good healing thoughts to my father-in-law we would really appreciate it. He had a major health scare this week but luckily he’s doing SO much better. Extra healing vibes are more than welcome at this time. We love you John!!

Happy Friday everyone.

Cheers from Tumbleweed Farm.

All of the above photos were taken by my girl Kate Schwager.

I’m going to make breakfast sandwiches for my boyfriend who starts work very early in the summer 🙂 Healing, positive thoughts to your father-in-law!

  2. Melissa Williams says:

Congratulations on the success of the cook book and your travels. I will eventually get my hands on the book…should I win one, that would make it all the sweeter! I have followed the blog for some time. I have a particular love for Parkdale and I stumbled on your blog as a result. Good thing I love to cook.

  3. Mallory says:

The new cookbook sounds incredible. Sending good vibes to your father-in-law!

  4. Juli Young says:

We sold our house. The new buyers are letting us stay in it for 6 days for free without renting it back. They wanted to keep our fridge, so after the cleaning folks have cleaned the place top to toe, im stocking the fridge w/ champagne (it’s their first home after losing 8 bids!) and making some snacks and treats – like my famous everything cookies. Funny. Almost as excited about this as I am about US moving into our forever home.

  5. Chloe | Conscious by Chloe says:

Yes, I made it till the end! I really love your writing and you would never bore me, especially since you kept the best part for the end, I mean PIGS!
It was such a treat following your book tour adventures on social media, I’m so glad you got to it with loved ones!
And yeah, I was really proud to see your book featured at Powell’s last week!
As for the giveaway, you gave me so many ideas, especially the “baking cookies for my mailman”. I should totally do something for our UPS driver, he always leaves in a hurry but always graces us with the widest smile.
As you probably know, what drives me is teaching people about ways to produce less waste, so I guess I’m gonna try to volunteer more than I do now for organizations whose values I share. On a different note, this will start this Sunday when I’ll participate in a survey for the Native Fish Society (Octave will be so happy to finally make me wear wadders, did I mention I do not like fishing, at all?!).
But like you said, sometimes it’s the little things, and I definitely should be kinder and more grateful, so I’ll keep that in mind next time I feel myself about to snap at someone!
Thank you so much for your wise words, always.

  6. Karlie says:

Love the photos and your story., I am lucky to live on a mini farm, and have chickens that are free range, organic birds. They lay many eggs so I give my organic eggs away to people. When people ask how much I ask them to do something kind for someone.

Very special thoughts for a good recovery for your father in law.

  89. Cathleen says:

Congratulations on the book and the tour! Hope each day is better than the last for you all.

  90. Sara says:

Andrea, it has been a joy to watch and read about your journey to publication. Congratulations to you and your entire farm team. I love happy hour and wine in cans. Yes!

  91. vicoria cahill says:

I love your commitment to kindness. I am going to find your book , blessings for what you do. Best wishes for your father-in-law

  92. amanda says:

I’m glad you realize the importance of the littlest kindnesses in life, like letting someone into the grocery line, that can make the biggest impact some days. I’m committed to living with the joy of Jesus Christ, and it’s amazing the difference He makes in my life and those around me.
Also, I would be most excited about your cookbook not only because of the seasonal-vegetable focus, but also due to your love of tahini. Let’s show the world how delicious and versatile it is.

  93. Julie says:

loved your story as usual but we do need pics of you and Taylor in the big apple! – i might pay the kindness forward by keeping some spare change in my pocket to put in other people’s parking meters when i’m downtown – thanks for sharing

  94. Leslie Pin says:

I am looking forward to reading and cooking from your book! Hope you will swing through Saint Louis!

  95. Dianna Roberts says:

First if your father-in-law breathed good vibes from your farm, he will be ok. Next I would love your cookbook. I plan to wash and fix my mother-in-laws hair who is in an Alzheimer’s facility and play games and sing with people in her wing, help with my grand children because of my grown children’s crazy work schedule, bake for our neighbor who gives us all the manure we want, give blood, drink the beer that is made to support the rivers here, make all the great food from your cookbook and invite friends and family over to eat it. Thanks

  96. Catherine Jackson says:

Sending thoughts for your father-in-law! I loved this post though – I always enjoy reading more from the blogger behind the recipes! I have been looking forward to getting your cookbook, but I would love to win one!

  97. Martha says:

Congratulations on your beautiful book! I’m paying it forward by helping my sister with her new baby

  98. Kiki Simpson says:

Miss Andrea… You have certainly won over the hearts of many! I love the look and feel of your blog, the simplicity (yet creativity) of your recipes, and the down-to-earth kindness of your soul. I am a corporate health and wellness director getting ready to retire from the corporate world and run healthy “farm to table” cooking classes from my home and also out in the community. I have a very small urban garden that I am hoping to expand (so HARD – but not impossible – to grow things in the desert!), but I also purchase from my local Arizona farmers every week for my cooking. I read a lot of food blogs as part of my research for what I want to do, and you are one that has inspired me. I wish you much success with your farm and health and happiness for your family. I have thought a lot about how to pay it forward to honor what you have contributed and I want to let you know you have inspired me to volunteer at the community food bank with their fresh, local produce project. It will be my honor.

  99. Tara says:

You just make me smile every time I read your blogs! My heart would love to live completely sustainable. Not sure how to make it happen but definitely taking baby steps all the time! Keep up the great work!!

  100. Karin@yumandmore says:

I’ve followed from the start and love your simple tasty and hands on farm to table recipes. The strength and stamina you and Taylor put into your dream is inspiring with a lil hrlp from Henry of course. Hope your father in law gets better quickly. I would love a signed copy of your book if you were willing to ship to Germany, if not I’ll order it doon myself.

  101. Suzette says:

Sending healing prayers to your father in law
I already am a huge fan of your newsletter and recipes!
    Thanks

  102. Pam Lewis says:

Prayers for John! Lifting a glass to you and Taylor! Kindness and love – a daily practice.

  103. Thia says:

    Andrea,
Congrats on your cookbook release, and all the fun you’re having with it. I was able to share in some of the fun, just through reading your story. Thanks for sharing!
I LOVE your new little piggies!! They are SO cute!
…and…I LOVE your idea of a month of random acts of kindness! I’ll join you.
    Thanks for the suggestion.

  104. Tatiana Wright says:

I love paying for the coffee order of the person behind me in the drive-thru line. Someone did it for me years ago and it brings just as much joy doing it for someone else as someone doing it for me:)

  105. Lindy says:

I Love your Blog,I want to join in and do also a 30 day pay it forward too.! I am a Native Oregonian from Eugene, Oregon. You are so Inspiring ! 🙂

  106. Roshni says:

This morning I walked by the fire station on my way to the grocery store and thought I might whip up a batch of cookies for them (particularly because we’ve had a couple scary fires this year). I’m sure I could find a winning recipe or two in your cookbook to test out. 🙂 Sending good vibes to your father-in-law!

  107. joanna says:

Congrats on the well deserved success! love reading your updates!

  108. Susan Kohler says:

    Hey Andrea –
I have enjoyed your blog for a long time, and LOVE your cookbook! I have a copy, and liked it so much I just sent one to my sister. I hope you start working on another one soon. – Russell’s mom

  109. Rachel Kent says:

High school ends this week for me, so I’m going to use my extra free time in the upcoming weeks to make dinner for my family!! My dad always works so hard to put a great meal on the table after a long day at work, so I’d love for him to be able to take a break. I’ll definitely be trying out some DUTD recipes!!!

  110. Rachel Kent says:

High school ends for me this week, so with my extra free time, I’m going to cook dinners for my family. My dad always works so hard to put a great meal on the table after a long day of work, and he deserves a break! Plus, there’s nothing more amazing than nourishing the people you love:). I’m definitely going to try out some DUTD recipes!!!

  111. Steph Peterson says:

Your cookbook looks AWESOME!! I’m coming home this week and am going to cook a special dinner for my mom and sister! (Maybe on of your recipes☺️)

  112. Sarah W says:

    Hey Andrea,
I first stumbled across your blog after falling in love with some of your recipes that were featured in the barre3 All In program. My husband is from a farming family in eastern WA and we love your approach to life, cooking and eating 🙂 My plan for paying it forward is to listen to the women in my life, find a way to anticipate a specific need, and take care of that need for them. For example: a friend who just moved back to our area with 2 little ones hasn’t had a day out with her husband in forever- I’m going to babysit and clean their house while they’re gone 🙂

  113. Kelly says:

I am so happy for you as your recipes are such a help for those of us trying to eat seasonally. I plan on donating some of the produce that we’re growing on our porch garden to our kind landlords who are renting this slice of paradise to us!

  114. emily says:

I’ll buy a coffee for the folks behind me in line. 🙂

  115. Beth says:

Add notes of kindness to books next time I return them to the library so the next reader will get a smile.
Sending good thoughts to your father in law.

  116. Sylvie says:

Congratulations on your book and thank you, to make it your mission to be kind everyday for one month! You are an incredible inspiration to me and for that I have put my significant other to work pretty hard this weekend to expand our garden space. I own your book and would love to forward one to my mom. I’ve inspired her to grow a garden of her own and it would be great for her to use her garden bounty in these delicious recipes. Sending good healing vibes to your father in-law, hope he gets better soon!

  117. Kate says:

Congrats on your book and book tour! I would love to win a copy!

  118. Hope Hill says:

Loved reading about he farm and your travels. The cookbook looks fantastic. As far as paying it forward, I try to help the elderly people I see at the grocery store whether it is helping get something off a shelf, find something or just to have a short conversation. I also like to always say something nice to anyone I encounter in a day, sometimes a smile, saying thank you or have a great day can maybe brighten someone’s day even it just distracts them for a moment. Love your blog and your great attitude towards life.

  119. Rose says:

Wish you the best for your book!! So exciting 🙂
And lots of good vibes to your father-in-law.
    Take care you all <3

  120. courtney says:

Wonderful to hear how the universe is supporting your journey! I went to the nursery this weekend and bought plants for all the folks at the office for mother’s day (for the boys too). Hope to do that again once we get to our frost-free days

  121. Stacy says:

Love it! Paying it forward, the act of kindness really goes a long way for not just the receiver, but for the giver as well. My neighbor suffers from a debilitating tissue and muscular disease which becomes worse when its cold out and makes it hard for him to do things outside. In the winter, after it snows, I shovel his driveway and front walk way. I’m also a nurse; I love what I do. When I see a patient is stressed and anxious, I stop a take a moment look them in the eye and have them breath with me. It really helps calm them, and lets them know I care. Sending healing thoughts and calming deep breaths to your Father-in-law! Crossing my fingers for your beautiful cookbook!

  122. sillygirl says:

I’m going to excuse bad driving behavior – for a week! One person doing something dumb and making people mad affects lots of people so I think one person giving someone a break can have the same effect.

  123. Katie says:

Love reading about your life on the farm, plus those little piglets are so cute!!! Congrats on the new book!

  124. Jessica says:

I love your idea to pay the kindness forward, and encouraging others with this giveaway. To pay it forward myself I plan on making a big to go dinner for a co-worker who just lost his dad. Additionally, I want to do something really sweet for my husband who’s been putting up with my whiney, swollen, pregnant self like a champ and completing all of the house projects like a champ. He deserves the world!
PS. I am sorry to hear about your father-in-law. Sending positives vibes for you.

  125. karen r says:

I’m trying to pay it forward by always giving people the benefit of the doubt, rather than jumping to a negative conclusion. I’d love to win your book – I would give it to my daughter!

  126. Christy Hackman says:

I want to give this book to my Mom as she is a one women farm team providing awesome local and sustainable produce in Des Moines, IA. Muffins to my co-workers for no reason is also a pretty great way to pay it forward! You’re awesome and so inspiring, Andrea, thank you for all you do!!

  127. Edie says:

My husband and I belong to an organic CSA and the young couple that grow and harvest the bounty for their members as well as going to farmer’s markets on the weekend remind me very much of you and your husband. They work very hard and we can feel the love when we pick up our weekly share at the farm. If I win the cookbook I would gift it to David and Danielle, I know they would really, really enjoy it.

    1. Andrea says:

Edie Congratulations! You won a copy of the DUTD Cookbook! I hope your CSA farmers enjoy the book! When you get a chance will you email your mailing address to andrea@dishitup.wpengine.com

  128. Lydia says:

I love hearing about your work on the farm- it is always so inspiring. I started into this year with the resolution of making more people smile every day, which is why I randomly leave good morning notes with and without sweets at work for my coworkers on the morning shift when Ive had the night shift. And I also just started writing letters again. I found myself so happy when I received a totally unexpected letter in the mailbox 2 weeks ago that I just wanted to share that experience. I promptly send one to my mother in law with a rhubarb cake recipe as an attachment and 2 days later she called me over the moon with joy and thanked me! (Bear in mind she lives in Ireland whereas we live in Germany!) So I would send the book to her as a surprise should I win.
Healing thoughts to you and your family!

  129. Jennifer B says:

I cannot wait to dive into your book! I admire everything you’re doing. My husband and I are looking for some property on which we can grow some food and I just love looking at your photos for inspiration. Of course, we only want to manage, like, 2 acres, but still! 🙂

To pay it forward, I am bringing dinner to a neighbor who has been battling a flu recently. She spent mother’s day alone and could use a pick-me-up.

  130. Karen Hyde says:

    Hi Andrea,
I am sitting in my hotel room in Banff, Alberta, Canada reading your lastest post to keep up to date with what is happening in your world. It seems funny to think that since the days of your first blog back East I have been shamelessly following along with your lovely recipes and life!! You offer such a bright moment to my day when I catch up with all the deserved attention coming your way. Working on the road as a tour guide I share your blog with all who have a shared interest in great healthy food and an amazing story (yours). Thanks for all the great food ideas you pass on…love the pigs!!

  131. Annie McHale says:

Healing juju on its way to father-in-law! I know he’s gonna feel it because it jolted the heck outta me when I sent it. I would love a copy of your book for my kitchen, which I will buy. However, should I be selected to win my first copy, I’m going to gift it to Washington Gorge Action Programs’ Food Bank in Bingen, where I will soon be giving free cooking demonstrations to folks. WGAP recently committed to growing fresh, organic produce and herbs in 3 gardens it’s acquired this year. Plant starts and harvested vegetables are being given to clients as a way to provide healthy food and empower folks to grow their own. I’ll be doing live demonstrations on plant identification and care, cooking, and drying/preserving. So happy for your success!!!

  132. Katherine Flores says:

Whew, what a post! Congratulations on your book tour, it sounds like such a wonderful reason to get away from the farm.
I plan to pay it forward by continuing to make my husbands breakfast and lunches everyday as my way of thanking him for making it possible to stay home with our 7 month old daughter, 13 chickens and small-scale backyard garden/farm! And, to further the pay-it-forward motto, I will be calm and patient behind the wheel (we all need to breathe when in the car), and remind myself that unless someone is hurt or dying, there is no real rush, and that everybody needs a smile throughout their day – I’ll be that person.
Thank you for your post! Healing thoughts to your FIL.

  133. Kelsey says:

I’m a new reader, who just recently determined to start cooking more plant-based meals. I found you via instagram, and followed you here to your site! I would love to win a copy of your book, and to pay it forward I would cook a lovely big meal out of it for our friends.

  134. shannon says:

Beautiful! I had no idea what went into a book tour let alone a complete team, months of time and patience that goes into a cookbook! Cheers to such a success! My husband and I are in the same mindset of local is better. We eat mainly venison that he harvests himself in the hunting season. Your little piggies will be raised the way they are supposed to be. Congrats on your new adventure. Healthy thoughts to your papa. 🙂

  135. sandy says:

prayers to your dad-in-law, it sounds like you have a special family, and of course, farm!

Two years ago I was bereft and broke ($8.72) after raising my stepkids for seven years and losing the relationship. I posted just a short bit about how I needed prayers sent and an old friend from SF called and asked me if a $1k visa card would help. That generous gift allowed me to drive from Colorado back to California and help me and my pup Jax get back on our feet. Six months later I was able to pay it back, and my friend would not accept the money. I ended up selling my car at the time, and when the transaction was done, I gave the new owner the $1k so that they could do some needed repairs that I had disclosed. It felt so good to be able to pay it forward!

  136. Megan says:

My husband just brought me a copy of your cookbook, which he bought at Bookshop Santa Cruz – another great place for an event whenever you happen to get there! I just wanted to let you know how much we both like it, and are looking forward to cooking our way straight through it. Started with the Dijon-tahini dressing on the day he gave me the book. 🙂 Sending best karma for your father-in-law. No more scares!

    1. Andrea says:

This makes me so happy! Enjoy the book and thanks for the recommendation on your local bookstore! cheers. xoxo

  137. Jenny Trad says:

    Hi Andrea
I’m so thrilled for you with your cookbook release
I purchased a copy yesterday from fishpond.com.au and am looking forward to getting it. I’ve always enjoyed following your story, making your smoothie recipes mostly, but am ready to branch out & try your savoury recipes. It’s great to see you & hubby achieve the success you’ve achieved, plus giving back to the community & even reaching our shores here in the land down under (Australia). Thank you for sharing your beautiful recipes to the world, of which all of us will benefit. I’ll put some prayers in for your father in law & now it’s to the kitchen to make one of my most favourite all time smoothies, your beet coconut dream smoothie, cheers & God bless ❤️
